Types of Sound

  • Ambient sound
Sounds natural to any film scenes environment.
  • Non diegetic sound
Sound is music/sound that only the audience can hear such as traditional soundtracks in films or a narrative.
  • Diegetic sound
Sound that other characters would be able to hear. A song on a radio or characters speaking.

Horror and thriller films use all three sounds to create a sense of suspense and build tension so that views are grabbed in. They use ambient sound and enhance it more so that the surrounding sounds of the environment becomes more powerful which makes a creepy tone to the film. This is also done with diegetic sounds.

Non diegetic sound is used to build tension of whats happening such as loud string music for when some thing has happened or a mix of scary tone music for when someone is getting closer to something and they are given a shock.
